NEW! Water Week: In-Class Modules
HMKWF-Low Resolution-Lesson Plans 2021
While we were not able to host a face to face water festival in 2021, we wanted to provide educators with a resource that would keep water education flowing while maintaining the positive energy of the Haliburton-Muskoka-Kawartha Children’s Water Festival.
The modules found within this document have been adapted from traditional water festival activities to engage grades 3-6 students at school and home in the spirit of the HMK Children’s Water Festival. It is the hope of the HMKCWF committee, that these will help mentors/Teachers and students have fun, get outside, and make a splash in water education!
Water Heroes Programs
Our Water Heroes website offers students and teachers a resource for on-line learning about water stewardship year round. We have recently adapted our “Big Splash Contest” (available through the ‘Share Your Ideas Tab’ ) , which celebrates water stewardship ideas and steps students are taking, to be open to any classes or home-school students within the region ~ it’s not only a great way to follow up a Festival visit but also to introduce or culminate a water-themed set of activities/ unit done at school or home. We offer learning activities, resources and games that are divided into categories of Water Science, Technologies, and Conservation/Protection there too. For Festival follow up or Earth Day/Week/Month activities, we offer pledge sheet templates. See www.waterheroes.ca for details.
Teacher Resources
The Haliburton-Muskoka-Kawartha Children’s Water Festival brings together the expertise of educators, water quality and quantity specialists, community volunteers, conservation groups, industry and government to provide elementary students in the Haliburton, Muskoka and Kawartha regions with the opportunity to discover the importance and diversity of water.
Two of the primary objectives of this holistic-focused event are to develop personal awareness of the importance of water, and to foster respect for the natural environment. It is hoped that by increasing awareness and respect, as individuals we will make a commitment to use natural resources wisely.
